My 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer stalls when sitting at a red light but not all the time, rpms go up then drop to 200 and car cuts off, already cleaned throttle body, changed fuel filter, changed map sensor, changed exhaust cam actuator solenoid and still stalls, any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
ProTech:
Is the check engine light on at all when it dies out?
No check engine lite.
Ok, it does sound like a throttle body problem. Are you sure you cleaned it out really good? The Trailblazer throttle bodies need to be near spotless for it to make a difference. All inside and behind the throttle blade, etc.
Yes i removed it and cleaned it spotless, you could eat off it.
Ok good, did you take it for a drive afterward so it could relearn the idle again?
What about pressure fuel regulator?
The fuel pressure regulator does not usually cause a stalling condition after the vehicle is running. If it’s bad, it will usually cause a hard starting condition. But it’s not totally improbable, just unlikely.
The vehicle starts fine and starts rite up after it stalls.
Yeah, then I would say it’s definitely not a bad regulator. Have you done a fuel pressure check?
I have not done a fuel pressure check. Yes i did drive it for a while,it did not start acting up for 4 days after i did all the work.
I would at least check it to eliminate that as a problem for stalling out.
Thanks i will give that a try.
The motor stop running when i turn the a/c on.
How about a little more information like what kind of car you have?!?!
2005 Chevy Trailblazer
OK that’s better and I can surely help you. The problem you are experiencing is due to a throttle body that has too much carbon build up inside it. When you turn on the air conditioning, the compressor is an extra load on the engine. The engine can’t get enough air at idle to stay running with this extra load applied. What you need to do to resolve your problem is an easy fix. Just clean the throttle body out with a good cleaner such as carb cleaner or brake clean. Clean it thoroughly and then take it on a test drive. Once the idle is re-learned, your problem will be solved.
Also the radio control **** to turn channels or volume and on and off won’t work the radio and cd will switch back and forth,, what could could cause this — 2005 trailblazer.
You may need a new radio. It would have to checked out to be sure. This is not any kind of theft or security problem.
How do i clean the throttle body.
You need to remove the air intake tubing and plastic housing that is above the valve cover, then you can access the throttle body to clean it.
Thank you.
I have one more question I have a 2000 GMC Sierra pickup with a 5.3 liter When I start my pickup it wants to hesitate when in gear or when i take off with it and then it goes away after i drive it for about 30 seconds, it seems like it is acts up more when the pickup it parked on a slope like in my driveway. When it is idling it runs fine.
A couple things to check….look to see if the fuel pressure regulator is leaking, that would cause a problem like you describe. Also, if the intake gasket has a vacuum leak, it cause the same issue, but go away after the truck has warmed up a few minutes. Either of those two things can cause the issue you’re having with your Sierra.

I have a 2003 Chevy trailblazer. One day my husband was coming home from work and he was at the red light and it just died. It would crank over but it wouldn’t start. So we put a new fuel pump, fuel filter, crankshaft sensor, and a differ sensor I can’t remember what it was called and we still can’t get the fuel pump to kick on and it just cranks over that’s it. Don’t what to keep on putting money in it
I have 2002 Trailblazer. It will start but wont stay running unless you keep your foot on the gas. When you start it it starts hard.
My son has a 07 trailblazer. His car has been shutting off on him when he reverse, parallel parks or is stopped. I’m not sure where to start to look in to this problem. I see the original post, but he says his car turns back in. My son’s does sometimes. Other times we’re have to jump it. Please help.
you need to remove two PCM fuses for 20 minutes and put them back after cleaning the throttle, otherwise it will not make difference .
Have an 03 5.3L Trailblazer. Died going up hill. Started right back up then drove up the hill. It did die before the hill on highway. Fuel pressure is 47 at idle. About 55 key on.
2004 Trailblazer 4.2L (straight 6), oil pressure is erratic, goes from reading 40# to 0# at idle. Ramp up RPMs to 2200 and gauge back up to 40#, idle back to 0#. Engine is idling like it has a miss, no power..you can floor the accelerator and it only get to around 2500 RPMs like it being choked out, Alt isn’t charging batt. Work done so far….. Replaced cam sensor, VVT sensor, oil pressure sensor, Coil over plug (x6), plugs, cleaned TB, checked all fuses and relays (good). Any ideas ????
I have 2002 trailblazer idles rough when let off the break and drive while sitting at a red light like it’s vibrating really hard I don’t really understand I’ve changed talk on sensors and [[it has oil in the intake like air intake why
I have a 2003 and it idles rough when in drive. This only occurs at a stop light or sign bu te it never dies. No check engine light and in tip top shape as far as an 03 goes.
I have a 2005 trailblazer that does he same same thing! Wondering what’s going on and is it safe to take out of own?
Hi i have a 2001 chevy silverado my wife was driving home from work the other day and went over the train tracks and she says it started driving funny so she pulled into gas station turned it off and it wouldn’t start again so she called me i went there popped hood and negative battery cable had come off so i simply reconnected it and started right up but kept stalling every like 20 feet we let it sit over night and ot drove fine the next day well for about 25 miles then started stalling again so it seems when the engine warms up the problem occurs there is no engine light on. Any ideas??
I have a 2002 Chevy Trailblazer that starts up just fine but when the car has sat a while it will start off driving fine but moments later it will not accelerate and the RPMs do not move while pressing the gas pedal. The car then kicks in and seems to be fine for the rest of the day driving it. Once and a while it may stall early when the problem occurs but it starts right back up. The Service Engine light never comes on. Any help I would appreciate it, my mechanic cannot figure it out.
Cam actuator solenoid valve is the prob
I had same issue on my 95 gmc dying wjen i.put in gear i changed everything on top of motor and all it was was i redid all vaccum lines on it for under twenty bucks boom for my problem
I have a 2002 Chevrolet TrailBlazer LS and I ran out of gas and every since I ran out of gas and filled it back up it makes a clicking noise now do you know what that is can anyone help me
Is the clinking noise coming from the gas tank or the engine?
I have a 2004 Chevy Trailblazer the Check Engine light is on and has been most of the time i have had it.. changed out the battery way back .Now it stalls at a stop when AC is on.. yes we cleaned throttle body after we took it to Chevy dealer and they wanted 2500 hundred dollars to fix .. it still continues this , the other thing they say is the PCM needs replacing at 1100 hundred dollars .. we let a chevy dealer 2 years ago “fix” it and we spent about 2500 and it never got better it has 140 thousand miles I really like this vehicle body is in great shape ..but tired of dealers bilking us
I have a 2002 Chevy Trailblazer went to drive it the other day and the check engine light came on said low oil pressure shut engine off and it died my husband checked and the oil wasn’t that low. a little but wasn’t that low so he put a little bit more in started it up and ran fine all the way home. We took it a couple later didn’t even make it down the street as soon as he hit the brakes it died again check engine light still on. It started right back up and we got it home. If it sits for awhile it will start up notice that when you hit the gas the oil pressure and RPM goes up but as soon as you let off the gas and hit the brakes they go down and it dies yes check engine light is still on what could be the problem or where should we start to check thank you
I have an 03 envoy changed spark plugs ,cleaned throttle body, and changed soilnoid 1,vibrates at idel and looses power when I’m just taking off.other then that it drives fine.it has 187000 miles on it.
2002 trailblazer…….starts perfect every time, but sometimes runs rough like all the cylinders are not firing, after taking off its sometimes violent but then you can feel it kick in and gain full power and drive perfect, but while driving will cut out and run rough again on and off, it’s not better in neutral or stopped or taking off only when it feels like it. Sometimes starts and drives fine until the next day. I don’t want to start dumping money into what i might think it is. Ugh help me!
I have a 2002 chev blazer once in a while after sitting for a period of 6 to 8 hours has a hard time staying running. I had it in to get looked at and the tech cleaned the map sensor and reinstalled it. It was ok then but I went to start it and the same thing happens again. Any ideas to cure this?
My 2002 Chevy Trailblazer wax was idling funny and choking out, I cleaned the throttle body but my MPG has not approved and still have no dummy lights. Idol is good starting at about $500 p.m. it sounds great running now but like I said my MPG sucks what are you think
I have a 2005 Trailblazer EXT LT that just completely shuts off while driving, have replaced ignition switch, computer, fuse box under the hood, camshaft sensor, checked fuel pressure and fuel pump and wiring. Nothing has worked was going to try MAP sensor next. Anyone have any other ideas??
I have the same issue with my 2005 Trailblazer we replaced the cam and crankshaft sensors and both O 2 sensors still dies going down the road and while the A/C is on some one said to clean the throttle body out and see if helps
A dirty throttle will usually only cause a problem at idle, or when letting off the gas and coasting. If your truck dies out while driving at speed, you need to check fuel pressure.
My gmc envoy 2004 keeps stalling when it’s idling or when we come to a stop… What could be happening?
Have a 2005 trail blazer.
Started stalling and red lights and eventually dies. Changed Cam Actuator Solenoid and now car won’t start. Any ideas?
Have you cleaned out the throttle body
2004 chevy trailblazer 4.2L, about 200k miles, two issues, 1st shuts off on red lights and stops signs when ac is on, no codes present or check eng light came on yet, 2nd when ac is on lack of power on local driving and on Highway, paddle down and like nothing, turn the ac off, power is back, also one I park the truck after a little driving can hare noises coming from the cat area like some thing is cooling down. Please help, did the through tune up, fuel injection service, thermostat change, fan clutch change, both o2 Sen replace because the code came up for both of them, one after another, need help
I also have 2002 TB and have the same exact problem (engine dies out at stop light.) It also struggles at low RPM (below 2000.) Once it goes up above 2000, it’ll work fine. The mechanic thought it was old spark plugs but new plugs did not make difference. Brand new throttle body seemed to work for a day and it went back to the same behavior. He cannot figure out what’s wrong.
I have a 2000 Chevy Trailblazer. I have replaced all sparkplug and wires, and rotor. The truck dies when it is at idle or close to it. I have also been driving with the gas cap off for 3 days in case it was vapor locked. I had the alternator checked (i did a start test and everything came back 100% good) because the voltage meter on the dash would bounce and when the truck dies it will usually drop to about 12 before it does.
I have an 03 Chevy trail blazer and it is running rough..it doesn’t pick up speed like it needs to and it burns gas..ive changed plugs wires, fuel filter cleaned choke and it still is not picking up speed.
The problem here is not the Throttle body, this is the first step that anyone who is working on these cars does and should be assumed to have been done already. The problem described here is this, the fuel pressure regulator has failed and is leaking raw fuel back through the vacuume line and directly into the air box or intake resonator. The stalling is literally raw fuel being sucked in by the throttle body. I bet if you make hard left turns it stalls even more. This is because the car dips to one side and the liquid gas actually will flood the car out. Remote the vacume line from the regulator and if gas drips out that is your issue. You will also see codes for rich conditions on HO2 upstream sensors.
