I have a 2006 Chevy Cobalt and the electric power steering is going out again. I had it replaced a couple of years ago but now it’s now working again. It seems very odd to me that it would go out again so quickly, what can i do?
Mechanic JK:
Was the first repair done under any factory warranty or did you have to pay for it?
No it was paid for because of a recall for my car. But it should last longer than 2 years.
I’m scared because I don’t have 1 or 2 thousand dollars to spend to fix it
OK. No it should not have not gone out again. That is, if infact the power steering motor is what has failed now. The recall only covers the motor, but there is also a module and steering column in the system. If the motor has failed again, then the dealer should replace it again at no cost to you.
Okay, that would be helpful, if it’s the module or the steering column, how much is that to get fixed?
If I remember, the module parts and labor would be approx. $400-$500. But the motor is by far the most common to fail.
Okay, well thank you very much this eases my worries a little, thank you very much for your time.
I’m going to reference you if that’s ok
Sure. I am sure if you search online you may also find other people with similar situation and their experience getting it replaced again.
Okay well do you have a name I could reference or anything? I’m just trying to have all the facts present when I go and talk with the place that fixed it before so they don’t try and screw me.
Just tell them you read it online from a dealer mechanic.
Okay, thank you very much again I appreciate your time.
Good luck.

Karen,
Unfortunately, what your dealer is telling you is true. The power steering control module is NOT part of any recall and is not considered failed due to a faulty power steering motor. The price they are quoting you does seem a little steep, but prices vary by dealer and region. GM will usually tell the dealer to help you out, even if it’s just a little bit on the price, if you complain enough. If you’ve been a good customer to the dealership, they should help you a bit anyway. Bottom line, if you want your power steering to work, and it’s the control module that is failing, you are going to have to replace it one way or another.
Thanks! I am fighting with Ourisman Chevy in Bowie and they will not fix my car correctly. They replaced the power steering motor. I drove for 1 1/2 days and the power steering went out. I took it back and they say it’s not covered by the recall and it will cost $1500.00 to replace the steering control module which isn’t covered under the warranty and is not part of the recall. Please could you tell me what to do? I have contacted GM’s customer service and the dealer told them power steering module is not a “consequential effect” of a bad power steering motor. Can you advise me what to do? THX! knovabilski@hotmail.com
