I have a 2001 Olds alreo 2.4. It wouldnt start the other day. will turn on but shut right off. I had recently replaced the fuel pressure regulator on it and started there after I had checked all the fuses. I put the new one in but the parts place forgot to give me the little oring on the bottom tube. i got that and put it on. after messing with it for 2 days it finally started 1 time and ran great but the a/c compressor wouldnt come on and radio is locked out. I shut it off and its doing the same thing again!! starts up and shuts right off!! I put a code reader on it and no codes stored is what it said.I also tried tapping on the fuel tank. Any ideas????

I’m assuming it ran fine before you attempted the fuel pressure regulator repair? Have you checked all the other fuses to see if any are blown? If you’ve lost battery power causing the radio to lock, you may have also lost the security information stored in the computer. Does the security light flash or stay on with the key on and all doors closed?

What could cause condition cited above? After pulling off road my 2002 Olds Alero would turn over and attempt to run but would fire for brief period and stop. Lights would not dim much when I tried to start so electrical does not seem to be the problem. What about a timing chain break? Or what other conditions could cause the problem, had to be towed after car stopped.

If you’ve got the four cylinder engine, a timing chain break or other timing issue could definitely be a cause of that situation. Usually they give a little more notice, such as running poorly, stumbling, hard to start, etc. Another likely possibility is that your fuel pump went out. You may get a little bit of gas to try and start the car or have the car run briefly, but if it is not putting out full pressure the car won’t run long enough to drive. I’ll assume since you had it towed, that the car is at a shop now. They should be able to quickly find the cause. A fuel pressure check and a COMPRESSION check will tell if either the fuel pump is bad or the timing is off/broken.
