I parked my impala on a side hill with about 1/4 tank of gas in it. When I went back to start it, it took 3 cranks to get it started. The low fuel light came on. I quickly drove to flat ground and after about 1 mile the car stalled and wouldn’t start again. I towed the car to a mechanic. He checked the fuel pump and that is good. The fuel filter is also good. The car will start and after about 15 minutes it quits running. The mechanic said that if he unhooks the maf sensor, the car runs fine. Anyone have any idea what is happening. Thank you.

Well it looks like you’ve answered your own question. If it runs fine with the Mass Airflow Sensor disconnected, then you need to install a new MAF sensor! Boy I love these easy ones! LOL

I just spoke with my mechanic. He is going to try a new maf sensor and see if that fixes the problem. But, I should say that he is trying that as a first part to try to fix the problem. He thinks it might be something else.

Well, if it runs fine with the old one disconnected I’m sure replacing it should fix you up. Good Luck…

My mechanic is getting in the maf sensor today. I hope it works and will let you know either way.

They replaced the MAF sensor and the car has been running fine. I was a little concerned about taking the car on an hour trip, but I didn’t have any trouble. Thanks to the forum and I hope my problem and solution helps someone else.

Glad you’re happy and have a good running car. I felt pretty sure it would be the MAF sensor.

Tried to get my Chevy Impala 2002 V6 3.8L car smog checked and failed. The codes were P0401 and P0741. I got the EGR value done AND the trans converter and new set of solenoids done. Car was fine for two days…then check engine light came back on. I know I still have to give my car a complete drive cycle but I KNOW the check engine should not have came back on. I was told by my mechanic that the EGR value and trans were the only things needed. I’m returning to him in a few days, but wanted to know what could be any other reason. It was very expensive for me to get these two services done on my car. I just don’t want to pay any more money if I don’t have to.
Thank you for your assistance.

Well, to start with, you’d really need to know what codes are there now. If one or both of the same codes came back, then the car wasn’t fixed properly. If a different code set, then that would need to be addressed and fixed. Also, it can take many drive cycles for all the tests to run and codes to pass on your car once it is fixed. You will fail again if you take it in and all of the monitors have not run and passed, even with the check engine light off.

The code P0741 appeared again. I went to the mechanic today and the mechanic informed me the trans converter would have to be rechecked. I’m not being charged again (I have a warranty), but wanted to make sure I was not getting cheated since the same code reappeared. Thank you for your quick reply and great assistance…I wish I knew about this site years ago!

The car was in reverse when engine stalled how do I get the transmission to return to park?

Sounds like the battery is dead if you cant get it back in park. Jump your car with another to get power to the car. Also see this link for a possible problem…
