1995 Pontiac Bonneville 3.8 liter 43,000 miles.
Just got the ECM replaced and ran great all day.
Went back out and had a premature start. Did not hold
ignition on long enough. Then started again. Never had the noise before this. Thought maybe a tooth broke off of the starter and is rattling in housing. Looked all
over top and bottom and it really sounds like it is coming from inside the right side of engine behind all
the pulleys. Any suggestions?
RE: You could have had a rocker arm come loose or fall off inside the valve cover. There could be a tooth broken off the starter or flywheel, or even a cracked flywheel. You’d really need to get a mechanics stethoscope so you can listen to parts of the engine and find exactly where the noise is coming from.

f it is a constant noise with engine RPM, then it sounds like a broken valve spring. Have seen this happen before with that premature starting you described. Sort of a kick-back that breaks a spring.
