Surge

When engine speeds up and slows down with no change in accelerator position position or brake application by the driver. This normally occurs when the car is sitting at idle, but can happen any time.

Surging can be caused by a vacuum leak or idle control motor problem. At higher speeds, a surge can be caused by a transmission problem. The check engine light my come on setting a code on the computer.
