A big thing we’ve seen a lot of over the past year or so, has been timing chain problems on the Chevy Traverse, Saturn Outlook, GMC Acadia, and Buick Enclave. All of these SUV’s have the 3.6 liter V6 engine with dual overhead cams. What is happening on these vehicles is that the timing chains are stretching which leads to correlation errors with the cam sensors and actuators.
Usually we see this only on 2007-2009 model year vehicles. After 2010, General Motors has seemed to correct the problem with updated chains and ECM calibrations.
This was first thought to be caused by lack of oil changes, and there was a recall to update the vehicle’s computer to shorten the oil life monitor. This was supposed to get customers in sooner to change their oil, thus hopefully eliminating sludge build up, heat, and excess wear and tear that leads to the chains actually stretching some.
On the older models, this didn’t seem to matter. They would still be coming in with the check engine light on and usually running rough. There would most times be trouble codes for cam sensor/actuator correlation, usually on bank 1. Something like a p0017 and a P0008 would definitely mean the engine has stretched chains. Now, this is no small job!! The entire engine and transmission has to come out on a lift table. This requires much work, just even disconnecting all the wiring harnesses and sensors. The air conditioning system has to be recovered and lines removed from the compressor. The trans cooler lines and power steering cooler lines have to be disconnected. The shift linkage, complete engine harness, upper and lower radiator hoses, and fuse box just all come out just to name a few.
Then, once the engine is out and accessible, the real work begins! After removal of the valve covers, intake manifold, power steering pump, belt, tensioner, water pump pulley, alternator and crank pulley, the aluminum front cover can come off. There are quite a few bolts that hold it on and they all have a small rubber seal that goes on each bolt. Now, finally, you can access the actual timing chains where the problem lies.
Once you can get your hands on the chains, you can easily feel the excessive play in the chain from being too far stretched out. This leads to the timing being off, setting the check engine light on, and usually a rough idle. There are three different chains that will require replacement with the updated parts. There is also some special tools needed, such as camshaft holding tools, etc, that are needed to do this job.
The chains, guides, hydraulic tensioners can all be taken off and the chains removed. Now the engine can be placed at top dead center and the holding fixtures installed on the cams once the timing marks are lined up on the crank gear and oil pump cover. The left chain goes in first, following the timing procedure, then the primary chain, then finally the right side cam chain. Once all the chains have been installed, and their guides and tensioners, the process of putting it all back together can begin. Let’s just say this is NOT a job for the backyard mechanic. It will take even the most experienced technicians the better part of a whole day to do this job, sometimes longer.
Luckily for most customers, the powertrain warranty covers this repair up to 100,000 miles. Otherwise it would be very expensive to repair. So, if you’re having these symptoms, don’t wait another minute to go in to your dealership and get this checked out!
Below are two pictures so you can see just how involved this job is. The first pic is of the entire engine/trans assembly out of the Traverse and ready to disassemble. The second pic is a close up of the three timing chains that will be replaced. You can see there are quite a few sprockets, and things to go around!

Everyone on here NEEDS to go to safecar.gov and file a complaint. That is the only way something will get resolved. I just filed a complaint because my 2011 traverse with 40,000 miles needs the timing chain fixed and has check engine light on with codes P0017 and P0008. This is not fun to pay for and something needs to be done! There are way too many people having the same problems!!!
Hi my 2009 Chevy Travese with 105,000 was fully covered for the Timing Chain repair by my Chevy dealership. Just got it back last week from the shop and it seems to be running like brand new. I guess there was a recall that fully covers the Timing Chains repair for 10 Years and up to 120,000 miles . I had no warranty left on mine so I’m glad for that recall. My regular mechanic told me to just Go to your GM Chevy dealer and have them look at it and the check engine light told them it was needed and they covered it all. So hopefully you too will be fully covered and feel as lucky as I do.
They told me it wasn’t a recall
I have a 2009 traverse and we are in the same boat however our gm dealership is not willing to help unless we pay $600 tear down time. Did you have to pay this?
Hi Liz, No I didn’t pay any thing for mine. no tear down fees or installation costs etc. But maybe it was because I was the original owner and had kept up on all the recalls and brought it back to the dealer I bought it from when it was new…. I dn’t know. There is a campaign on this not sure what that means in relation to na recall but mine was fully covered.
Liz Being yours is also a 2009 traverse (like mine) it should be covered by the campaign. They might have told me that there could be a fee for looking at (you know the usual $75 to look at it and we’ll put it toward the repair) anyhow in the end it was fully covered and I paid no costs for them to look at it or repair it . Maybe you need to call an arbitrator at Chevy Head quarters?? Not sure how you do this but Ive heard tell of such things, maybe they are available on-line. Maybe consider having them do it and then petition a Chevy arbitrator to get the 600 paid back, or try another Chevy dealer, Not sure What else are your options if the repair costs $2000-3000 and the car is broke ??
Well no recall on the 2011 and I have to foot the bill even though gm motors knows it’s a problem on the traverse. So I now have no car and a huge bill.i will never buy a Chevy vehicle again.
I agree Nina, I have a 2010 traverse it’s down with the same situation
Can someone tell me what if my 2010 Traverse has a special 120,000 mile Warranty and if so, where can I find the paperwork on it so that I can take it to my dealer?
GM told me no warranty on the 2010, only the 2009 not sure if they are full of crap or not wanted to charge me thousands to fix
This is the exact same thing that my car has been doing. It would shake real hard, say reduced engine power, then a few minutes later, it would be fine. I even got a letter in the mail about it. Took it to Ron Craft Chevrolet and they said that there was nothing wrong with it. Ughhhhh!!!!
Heather – Where did you see the bulletin that GM said not to repair the engine on a 2011 traverse. I am out of warranty also and have an engine issue. Please reply
Nina,
Check safercar.gov, manufacturers comments, specify engine to narrow your search, there is a link to click where you can download the service bulletins on the vehicle!
I don’t know what your specific engine issue is but I do know this…the oil life monitors allow extended times between oil changes in a vehicle with a flawed engine that consumes too much oil. buildup causes less oil to get to vital engine components (I’m not a mechanic, just reading and putting pieces together). The timing chain, also flawed, stretches and may lead to signs of engine running rough or out of time. Sometimes displayed as a cam sensor issue but underlying problem is the timing chain. If not caught early and replaced, you may progress to engine failure as I did. This engine is designed poorly and despite replacing components it will inevitably fail again. Increasing oil changes may prolong failure but not prevent failure. My advice to you is get rid of this vehicle while your engine is still alive, If it’s still alive.
I told my coworker 3 weeks ago to get rid of her vehicle NOW, same year, same engine, same miles as mine. She was going to but was working a lot and didn’t have time to car shop, her engine failed on the way to work last week!
Get rid of this vehicle now or as soon s it runs, you will be sorry you waited another minute if you don’t! I am sorry you are going through this! I have cried for weeks and now I have just accepted the facts and am trying to figure out what to do as my car still sits at the dealer needing a new engine!
Heather! Thanks for the info I agree with you.i have to have mine fixed the mechanic is hopeful it’s the timing Chana about $2200. Have to flat bed the car their in two weeks told me do not drive it at all.after he takes it apart he will be able to see if it is only that. Then I will trade it in.thinking never buy a checy gm vehicle again.they don’t care .they know it’s still a problem since 2009 but won’t extend the warranty on the 2011 engines. Makes me sick to think how much these cars cost us and how much money they make .
Heather if your initial report of your problem was prior to the expiration date than you should be covered. A week later and now you’re not covered isn’t correct. Not matter what they told you initially was the problem, obviously they were wrong. If you persist and make a lot of noise they’ll have to do something. Contact all you have to: Service Manager, Owner (Dealership), Warrenty company, etc. Not sure if you’ve had it repaired at this time but you may be owed a refund. I’m now faced with a timing cover leak and no warranty, OUCH. 2011 Chevy Traverse 120,000+ miles.Best wishes.
I recently took my 2010 Acadia to someone because my check engine light was on, having other issues as well, like a vibration at times, no power up hills, seems like it is having problems shifting when gas is pushed, etc. (not good with descriptions) After he hooked it up he told me it was the timing chain and it was stretched. I have 160,000 on it. My question, who do intake it to so it can be fixed? How expensive is this? Thank you!
We are repairing mine now. Take it ASAP to a mechanic. We waited to long and ended up having to have the heads replaced as well as the timing chains!! The tensioner gets loose/stuck and let’s the chain slip. It’s a huge mess!!
Thank you for your response. It is currently in the shop. I hope I didn’t wait to long. It’s a mess.
This fix is going to run you around 2000.00
I was told about $2,500.00. I hope it’s closer to $2,000.00. Thank you for your response.
Can I upgrade my 2009 traverse engine to a 2014 traverse engine ?
Yes we put a 2013 in my 2009
2010 GMC Acadia possible timing chain stretch issue. Purchased vehicle used 2 yrs ago now have 96K miles on it. Yesterday car wouldn’t start after being drive 10 minutes earlier. Pulled codes and all pointed to the 1,3, and 5 cylinder ignition issue. Cleared codes and seemed to be fine, drove 20 miles with deep resonate sound at cruise that went away when accelerating and decelerating. Drive back home sound remained the same and check engine light came back on. Pulled codes once again and different set came up with P0008, P0016, and P0017 signifying timing issues which makes me believe timing chain stretch. I think I might be in for an expensive fix but most I want this reported to manufacturer to maybe be the last straw to include my year vehicle recall. Any info would be appreciated.
Having codes showing that my 2010 Acadia needs timing chain replaced. However the car is showing no systems, such as rough idling. Should I continue using it and if so would it possibly cause further damage?
You keep driving it, and the engine will be distorted. Fix it now, it will cost around 2000.00
Same here with out 09 traverse. Been a lemon from the start!! The timing chain and transmission has been changed in the past year and a half under warranty. Now the timing chain is “stretched” again….to the tune of $2100. We have 125k miles so not under the 120k warranty. GM is offering to pay $600. We are still paying monthly for the POS. Weighing options now to trade in or not. It sucks that I can go buy a 2012 traverse and be fine….just 4 or 5 more years of payments :(
Can anybody tell me if its worth getting this fixed or am I just wasting money and it will break again soon? Wouldn’t mind fixing it if it will last.
Somebody out there needs to bring a lawyer on board.
Hello Everyone
I’m having the same problem right now my 09 traverse has been sitting at there lot since 5/01/2016 they replace the timing chains , power steering pump, water pump an updated software an my transmission is running rough idle is way to high around 2,000 rpm car complete shut off on highway scared the crap out of my wife an kids . By the way this happened on Mother’s Day broke down on Sunday . Took it back the following Monday got a phone call from the service advisor my pistons are knocking need a new engine WTF!!! an it’s now 5/26/2016 an still no answer from GM all there saying is I have to pay out of pocket B/S they have to be responsible since they change the timing an mayb set the timing wrong or didn’t change the actuators . Idk I’m not a professional . But yet service advisors are pushing me to pay a engine tear down fee of $500 why idk when the tech’s have confirmed my Pistons are knocking hello moron it needs a new engine Pistons are knocking . I feel GM doesn’t really care of there customers safety . Do you have an update an what’s going on ???? 140,000
My dealer wants 1K for a tear down (10 hours of labor) to determine the cause of my engine failure in my 2011 Traverse with 67,000 miles. They know what is wrong, they received numerous bulletins about this engine. These bulletins are available on the National Highway Traffic Safety site safercar.gov
I will never be so quick to buy a car or trust a salesman, dealer or service technician for a dealer again! I do not know how they sleep at night making money off of endangering families!
We paid $$$ for new timing chain on our 2009 Enclave. That was 30,000 miles ago. Guess what? We need it again. White Bear Superstore said last time they didn’t change the actuators because it didn’t pull that code. Bad actuators means new chain at about $2800. Low oil level was partly to blame. This was a lemon from the start.
J
Which piston needs to be on tdc to install first chain
I do NOT think GM has solved this issue at all. I have a 2011 Traverse and my timing chain is just about to break, or stop working, any day. I have talked to GM because my car has the EXACT same issues as the model years before had but they told me “sorry we can not offer any help”. I have always had Nissans before this car and I will go back when I get this one paid off. All my Nissans had over 200,000 miles and nothing but regular maintance. Its really sad the US can’t make a good car.
Susan U
Yep same issue with my 2011. Going to foreign cars I have had it with this .GM dosent care even though they know the engines are bad
2009 Traverse
My 2009 Traverse has approx. 140K I took it to the dealer because the engine warning light came on along with other messages such as “Service Stabilitrak”, “Service Traction Control”, and “Service Brake System”. I was most concerned with the Service Brake System message so I took it on Wednesday, 4/27/2016. Today is Friday, 4/29/16 and received a phone call from the service advisor that the timing chain must be replaced to the tune of $5K. WTF? The special extended warranty ended at 120K miles and now it can be replaced free of charge. I put in a call to GM Customer Service to see what they could do because it’s still under the 10 years period. What is this business of 120 miles or 10 years, whichever comes first? Sounds like a scam to me.
2013 Acadia with 36k miles, all chains need replacing. Was driving 50mph on busy city highway when I lost all power, power steering, and brakes felt hard. Safely pulled to right lane, no shoulder. Only warning I had was a quick flash on the dash that said service charging system. I bought used in January and just did my second oil change since purchase even though I have only put 2400 miles on it. Check engine light didn’t come on until after the stall. Very scary experience. So here I am without a vehicle for a week while it’s being repaired.
That might be an issue with your throttle valve. Had exactly the same situation with my 2011 Traverse. Was about $500 to repair, but GM issued a recall on this issue late last year, so I was reimbursed for the repairs.
Thank You for verifying everything that I have researched and have come to discover as I have been paying on a 5 year old Traverse with 67,000 miles that doesn’t run because the dealer said I need a new engine and I cannot afford a new engine and still owe $18,5 on the car. This has been a horrific experience. I though someone would help since my warranty expired 9 weeks before the failure and because I was already at the dealer before my warranty expired complaining of something wrong with the engine. I came to find out this was a known problem and I was told it must have been bad watered down gas before the failure to be pushed out the door and drive this vehicle with my children when they knew it was my engine. I was there 4/22/16, my warranty I find out later expired 4/28/16 and now I need a whole new engine and nobody will help me as I pay for a vehicle that doesn’t run and sits at the dealership until I can come up with the 1K engine tear down fee to even diagnose the problem and then MAYBE GM might help me but I will still be paying at least $4,500. of the re-manufactured engine price of $6,300.
I am devastated, I have been crying for weeks and nobody will help me and so it sits there while I pay $500/mo. car payments on a car I cannot afford to repair and if I stop paying to save the money for repair, the bank takes it and I am out 18,5 plus fees and will ruin my credit from obtaining a car in the future.
Master Tech, any chance you could share the info about repairing the timing chains in the 3.6 chevy traverse? what is the difference in the updated parts? do i need to get them from the dealer or any auto parts store will have them available?
i would really appreciate you sharing this info.
Thanks in advance for your help.
I nees to do it myself also do u have any info on all the torques? Any j fo would help i will continue to search the net
Hello Marc if you send me your e-mail I can send you the info you need. Also FYI the chains can be done with the engine in or out of the vehicle.
Could you send me the same info on replacing the timing chains on my 2010 traverse. Can they be changed without pulling the engine? Thanks in advance.
can you send the info to me
Could you please send to me as well. Thanks
Master tech I have a 2011 traverse that needs the timing chain changed. Can you send the instructions to javis1997@gmail.com please and thanks
Master Tech, please can you send me the instructions of replacing timing chains with engine in vehicle. Looks like I have the same issues.
Much appreciated.
Master tech, would you please send me the instructions on how to replace the timing chains with the engine in the vehicle? Thank you so much in advance!!
Hello Master tech,
I have a 2010 Traverse LT that I do intend to change the timing chains. Could you please email me at smfunk69@ with any pointers from all parts to replacement of parts while in vehicle. PLEASE.
Thank you for your knowledge and comments. God bless.
Master Tech could you send me info to change chains in 2010 Traverse
Master tech, interested to see if you are able to send info about how to go about replacing timing chains in an 08 acadia with the engine still in the vehicle…. my email is XXX
Hey master tech. My wifes Traverse has been sitting in the driveway with the same issue and have debated doing the work myself. However, getting it lifted to remove the engine is quite an issue. I would love to see your repair procedure. my email is XXX
Hi Paul master tech or Kerry could you please send me those specs too I am in the same boat to and it’s sinking much appreciated if you could email is XXXXX thank you paul
Master tech,
Can you send me the info too? I’m thinking I’m about to have to do this to my mom’s 2010 Traverse.
I have a 2011 traverse with check engine light on. Code says engine position system performance bank 1. Everything I’m reading suggests that is a time and chain issue. However I am not experiencing any vehicle problems. In fact the vehicle runs great and that’s with 114k miles on it. Could be something else that is linked to the time and chain?
i just took my 2012 traverse to the dealer with a check engine light on . well it was the timeing chain. i had a power train warranty and know they tell me that its not covered because they are saying i did’nt change my oil correctly. then the rep continues to say that my traverse will use 1 quart of oil every 2000 miles. so if you dont change your oil but every 5000 you will be 2/12 quarts low before you have to change it. we were not notiifed at the time we bought the car and know they want to replace the engine for $7100.00 which i dont have so who is tio blame .beware if you have a traverse because this will happen to you and if anyone can help me i would appreciate it
safercar.gov
This is a known problem, they are blaming the consumer for their flawed engine. I hope that you received some help and if you did please let me know. I cannot get any help on my 2011 Traverse with 67,000 miles that needs a new engine, they wont do anything until i pay 1K tear down fee to determine the cause of the failure but say despite that they know I will need a new engine so it would be wise just to pay for an engine swap $6300. for a re-manufactured engine. I still owe 18,5 and my car that sits on the lot at the dealer were it was towed weeks ago.
Same thing happened to us on our 2009 traverse Ltz!! GM should be ashamed of these vehicles that cost a huge amount of money in the first place. I now understand why a lot of GM plants have shut down. We will never purchase another GM! They obviously know this is a huge problem and are willing to do nothing about it.
Same thing on my 2010. Timing chain diagnosed wrong now had to put a new engine engine in it. Will never buy gm again
Watch out if you’re buying a used GMC Acadia. I bought a 2007 Acadia, which checked out clean on CarFax and showed only routine repair in GM dealership computers. Within a few months, a warning light comes on and it shows a timing chain problem. Dealership says GM has known about this defect in their design for years, putting a ‘special policy’ in place to pay for repairs before 120,000 miles. Since I bought the car used, I never heard a word about this. GM sent a bunch of propaganda, as they do with all car buyers but never told me the car would likely quit running soon because of the defect they knew about. Now the car has stopped running, with dealerships saying repair will cost north of $3,000. I call GM’s customer service brigade and supervisor says the “final answer” is that GM won’t pay a dime to repair this problem they caused. They’re fine for all of us to buy their cars, with all the defects they are keeping secret, and then leave us stranded. Bottom line: They issued a ‘special policy’ to repair it, but didn’t tell this owner. Then, when the car quits after an arbitrary 120,000 mile mark, they’re fine to have us making monthly payments for cars that don’t run. They claim it’s like exceeding a warranty period. But shouldn’t it be different if it’s a defect that they covered up? I feel a lawsuit coming on, just to force GM to do the right thing.
I got one for you…… I own 2012 Acadia, took the vehicle in because the warning said low oil pressure. Now I have only had the car one year and I did 4 oil changes in that year. The service department that I took it to said engine sludge was the problem and they were not going to fix it. The wanted me to pay $4,000 for sludge removal. Of course upset and very angry about this, I had my vehicle towed home. However not being the ignorant female they thought I was . I asked for a printout of the diagnostic codes, did some research and sent the car to another dealership who says “it’s not sludge, your timing chains are bad”.meanwhie I’m out nearly a thousand dollars on rentals and seven hundred on a breakdown of the engine for a misdiagnosis. Yeah lawsuit sounds about right!
Marie,
How did everything turn out? Did you get any help? I can’t get anyone to help me and need advice. I have the same engine in my 2011 Traverse with 67,000 miles. The engine “locked up” while driving and they are telling me I need a new engine. I now know of the issues with this engine so the dealers must know too. Service bulletins from GM to the dealers can be found on safercar.gov and after you put your vehicle information in go under manufacturers comments and click the link that downloads the service bulletins. They knew for years about these problems and this engine is used in numerous years and makes. I never realized till now that my husbands 2010 camaro had the same engine and it had to be replaced at 38,000 miles. There is an inherent flaw with this engine and many people haven’t spoken up because it happened during their warranty period and therefore was covered (like my husbands) but for those of us that they say sorry, your out of luck, your warranty expired or we are going to blame it on something you did or didn’t do to get out of taking any responsibility for it, we are the ones suffering and paying GM big $$$ for them to turn around and make us pay more and more on a vehicle that is with certainty will have premature engine failure.
HI Marie ,
I’m having the same problem right now my 09 traverse has been sitting at there lot since 5/01/2016 they replace the timing chains , power steering pump, water pump an updated software an my transmission is running rough idle is way to high around 2,000 rpm car complete shut off on highway scared the crap out of my wife an kids .
Your story sounds very similar to my own, did you have any luck? I don’t know what to do. I have a 2011 Traverse with 67,000 miles on it that needs a new engine and I cannot afford the 1k teardown fee that my dealer requires to determine the cause and then the cost of a new engine because my warranty expired 9 weeks previous. I complained of the engine surging and the rpm’s sky high and the car shaking during my warranty period and was told the gas station must have sold me watered down gas because nothing was wrong with my car. Now my warranty is expired and nobody will help me. I owe 18,5 on my car still and it has been sitting for weeks as I cant afford to repair it.
My check engine light came on about 95K. I now have 110K. will GM still replace this for me.
Chevy can’t find problem with 2010 Chevy traverse radio no sound
My 2010 Acadia did this, and it also would play the radio when the car was off and doors were shut, basically when I wasn’t in the car! It was a computer issue but all they told me was that there was a “grimlin” in my dash. No reall explanation. I would look it up on my vehicles repair record on the GM website…but guess what…for some reason my 19 repairs over one year done by the GM certified dealership won’t show up on the customer side of their website…hmmmm.
Is there a recall concerning timing chains for a 2010 Traverse?
There should be cause my 2010 traverse is in the shop right now and needs a new timing chain. Running around $3K. This is horrible to buy a truck within a year and need all this work. I took it in 6 months ago because of the steering wheel. Urgg
If the timining chain brakes on the Chevy traverse will the cams hit the values in the motor or is this the type of car that don’t hit the values .?
Would anyone know? I have a check engine light code p000d. have anything to do with the selenoid, that is what the dealer is telling me but when I look online it sates it is related to the chiming chain. my car is a 2009 Saturn Outlook
I have Chevy traverse 2010. I bought this truck with 24 thousand miles on it, by the second month. My check engine light was piping on and going off. I took in, they check it said it was nothing. But auto zone gave me tickets when they check it. Codes p8000. Camshaft/timing chains. Well they checked out. Light went off. I drove it . A year later light came back on. Bobbrockman fixed it ,August 2013. Keep the vehicle for 5 days. A year and one month October 2014. The light came back on, and now they want me to pay for it!……2,200 . So I called the better business bureau. Filed a case with them. I had to pay 1000, down before they start on my vehicle, then they comes with this ! About lack of oil changes is the reason I need a new Timing chains. Lack of maintenance cause these. I had proof of my oil changes.so I filed a case because they called me and said I still owe thousand and fourty dollars to get it fixed. I pick it up and now my air conditioning is out. Bobbrockman dealer ship is rip off, along with these General Motors. I have replaced two timing chains before 100k miles., powersteerng system, wheel bearings, rotors and air conditioning system looks like tomorrow. I will be going to the news telling my story and how the dealer got over on me. Iam not paying another dime on this vehicle it was a piece of crap! From the beginning.
Did you have any luck? I am going to have to file complaints too! I owe 18,5 to the bank on a 2011 Traverse with 67,000 miles and need a new engine. The car has been sitting at the dealer because i cannot afford this, nobody will help me and I don’t know what to do.
I’m with you. Bought my 2007 GMC Acadia used and after topping 120,000 miles, it quit running entirely. Dealership said GM has been aware of this timing chain defect in design since at least 2012. They quietly issued a “special policy” to pay for repairs under 120,000 miles. But since I had already topped this arbitrary 120,000 mile mark, GM says it won’t pay a dime to fix this problem. They’d rather we all make payments for cars that don’t run. I’ll continue to fight this and keep you posted. GM claims it’s like exceeding a warranty period, but that’s a cop out. How can you exceed a ‘warranty period’ or a ‘special policy’ period they never told you about? If they knew it was poorly designed and would stop running, shouldn’t they fix it?
Do you know what this “special policy” is? My Traverse is honestly just 61 miles away from hitting 120,000 miles!!!

I just took my 2010 Acadia in for this at 66,000 miles, 5 years 22 days after purchase. Check engine light would come on for a day them go away for several days. Did this for 2 months. I did as the manual suggested, tried new tank of gas, figured it was an emissions problem as the manual suggests; only flashing check engine light are serious. When the light finally stayed on for more than a week I took it in. It never ran rough, not once. I’m a little mad that the warranty was up less than 30 days ago and I’m stuck footing the entire $2600 bill now.
Crystal,
I have a 2011 Traverse, same engine, complained during my warranty period and was told it must be the gas station sold me watered down gas. Now i need a new engine. Apparently my warranty expired 6 days after I went in there the first time and they said nothing was wrong, maybe just watered down gas. Now my car sits for weeks at the dealer as I cannot afford the cost of a new engine. still paying 500/month to the bank for my loan and owe 18,5. any help or advice would be great! Thanks
I too have a 2010 Acadia with 83,000 miles on it. Timing chains are stretched and need repairing, to the tune of $2,000+, and that’s hoping that nothing else is wrong with the vehicle. I’m totally disappointed that GMC knows that this is an issue with the vehicles and they aren’t doing anything to help out the consumers. This vehicle was $48,000 brand new and I’m running into this issue. Wow.
My 2012 has only 60,000 and is in the shop for repair of timing chains, Thry also tried to tell me that it was oil sludge was my problem and GM refused to fix it. My grand father worked for GM for 30 years, would not let me by another brand of car and I’m sure he is rolling over in his grave now to see what they are putting me thru
I’d possibly try another dealership due to the vehicle having a special coverage policy up to 120,000 on the chains. If you have oil change receipts they help. But it should be totally covered.
I just had mine replaced less than a year ago, now it needs them again but I am not under the certified pre-owned warranty anymore. Do you know if they have a year certified GM repair warranty?
Contact the attorney Generals office or file a lawsuit.
We have 2010 traverse that did the exact same thing we have just over 100,000 . We also change oil like clock work. Dealership quoted us price 8000.00 to replace engine. I am tearing engine down and doing the work myself. The engine oil is burnt and caked inside heads and timing cover. The timing chain appears to be fine however it is obvious it was not pumping oil. Looks to me GM has some serious issues with this engine, there should be a class action law suit.
Hi what did you find? dealer put chains in at 90000 and 5000 miles later it broke intake valve off #3 and pushed it into bottom of intake. Thanks Jim
Let me knowing it is one I need to file also
so my bitch, the last 2 years as i’ve surfed the internet searching on ‘engine light / p codes for 2008 acadias’ , finding all kinds of long posts from people with the same issues (like here) , is – WHEN DOES GM FINALLY STEP UP, AND TAKE RESPONSIBILITY ?
Our 2008 enclave timing chain broke at 140 000 km, destroyed engine, GM no help at all, new engine ect. $10 000 repair. Told us our car was not included in any timing chain recall/repair!
I also have a 2008 Acadia. Mine died yesterday while sitting in a drive thru line. It made a weird shuttering noise and that was it. Had is towed to my mechanic who says a need a new engine. Of course, my warranty is expired because it’s a 5 year/100,000 mile and although I only have 82,000 on the car, it is 7 years old.
Holly,
My 2011 Traverse at 67,000 miles also needs a new engine and I cannot afford it. Were you able to get any help?
Does anyone have actual info on extension of warranty? Bulletin number etc ??
08 with oil changes per design just let go..my dealer does protest to much!!
I have 2008 GMC Acadia with 89,000 miles. GMC told me that my warranties are all expired but I have a special coverage 13091 which is something to do with the water pump. It looks like I have a crack in my timing change cover. Is it possible that the water pump could of helped with the crack in the water pump?
you do not have to remove the engine to replace the timing chains. have done multiple with engine in car.
Im about to do mine with the engine in the car, wondering if anyone has all the torque info…
2010 Acadia SLT 170000km
